Experience that matters
Between Mike and Phil, there’s over 60 years of combined industry experience – a number they agree feels slightly scary when said out loud, but one that brings enormous value when it comes to mentoring the next generation.
That experience is now being passed on through Amber Haines, who joined the team as an apprentice and has quickly become a key part of the business.
The apprenticeship structure
Amber is currently completing a Level 3 Diploma, with her final qualification being Engineering Technician.
The apprenticeship is structured to balance theory and hands-on experience:
- Two days per week at Shrewsbury College
- Three days per week working on-site with the team
From an early stage, Amber has been trusted with real responsibility. She is already attending customer sites unaccompanied, carrying out repairs, servicing and installations, as well as delivering customer training – a strong reflection of both her capability and confidence.
Looking ahead
Once the apprenticeship is complete, the plan is for Amber to remain with the company long-term while Mike and Phil have one eye on retirement plans!
There are already discussions underway about bringing on another apprentice, continuing the cycle of skills development and knowledge-sharing.
Reflections on the journey
Mike’s perspective:
“We’ve both learned a lot during the process and will continue to do so. It’s been interesting and satisfying to see the change in the level of Amber’s confidence in dealing with machinery and customers.
(Some customers actually prefer Amber to visit rather than me or Phil – apparently she’s considerably less grumpy.)”
Amber’s perspective:
“I’ve learned a lot from Mike and Phil in the year I’ve been here and have really enjoyed starting to get out to meet different customers. It’s a very different industry for me, having come from an agricultural engineering background, so having Mike and Phil here to guide me and show me the ropes has been priceless.”
The result
This apprenticeship has proven to be more than a training programme, it’s a shared learning experience that’s strengthened the team, built confidence, and laid strong foundations for the future of the business.
